How to Receive God’s Love: Don’t Over Complicate It!

We all have an inner desire or call it an unquenchable thirst, that can only be fulfilled by receiving God’s love. The problem is that many of us don’t know how to receive it. This is often because we’ve lost sight of all that God has done for us. Besides the fact that God gave up His only son for us, we’re so caught up in the problems that we fail to notice the constant gifts that surround us. The shade He offers on a sunny day, a beautiful smile from a friend or stranger (when we need it the most), and a baby’s tiny hands are all signs of His love that surround us every day.

Why You May Have a Hard Time Receiving God’s Love

Disappointment or setbacks are the top reasons people have a hard time receiving God’s love. Life experiences like losing a job, a relationship that suddenly ends, the death of a loved one, can savagely shake our belief that God loves us, making it feel impossible to receive it, feeling rejected instead. When you feel yourself giving in to a feeling of rejection, consider the following.

We are All Different

Some people can receive God’s love effortlessly. Others have a much harder time. There are several reasons for this because we’re all different. It could be feelings of guilt, based on behavior that somehow convinced us we’re unworthy of His love. It could also be the misinterpretation of his disciplines. The truth is that His love and disciplines are intimately connected. While He will help correct negative behaviors, it’s not going to be in the form of eternal punishment. His Son already paid the price for our sins. Regardless of our differences, God loves all of us.

Another reason people have trouble receiving God’s love is that they feel it is selfish to receive. As a result of this belief, some feel that they don’t deserve His love. This simply is not the case. God wants us to be happy, but only by receiving his unconditional love can we truly accomplish this.

How to Receive God’s Love

In order to receive His love, you must be committed to opening yourself up to him. Nobody else can do it for you. Here are five things you can do that will help you open yourself up to His eternal love.

1. Know that God Loves You

When the feeling of hopelessness threatens to overwhelm you, the absolute best way to fight it is knowing that God loves you. There is abundant proof that God loves you all around you and in His written word.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

2. Believe that God Knows You

A lot of us base our self-worth on our accomplishments and how others see us. Some feel shame about the past, others set unrealistic standards, and even more define worth based on what society deems worthy like the color of your skin, the clothes you wear, or the status of your Instagram account. It doesn’t need to be this way! If only we could see ourselves as He sees us! God knows us better than we know ourselves. He is aware of every situation in our lives and will never abandon us.

“You have searched me, Lord, and you know me” (Psalm 139).

3. Trust Him

To know God is to trust Him. It’s difficult to trust someone we don’t know, and that’s the key to discovering how to trust God. He is never deceitful and always fulfills His promises. The more we let ourselves experience His grace and faithfulness, the more we have confidence in Him. Of course, that means you have to read His Word.

God has graciously made himself available to us through the Bible, His sacred Words to His people.

“Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised” (Romans 4:20-21).

4. Allow Him to Love You

It’s important to keep in mind that the heavenly Father isn’t the same as your earthly father. God offers pure, unconditional love – always. His love for us is greater than our failings. Holiness comes not from your love of God, but from accepting and staying in God’s love. So, let God’s pure love wash over you.

5. Don’t Make it Complicated

Receiving God’s love is simple. You don’t have to say a special prayer, spend hours every day studying the Bible, or attend church (gasp – I said it). These things are important, but the most important thing you can do is accept Jesus Christ as your savior and be willing to receive His love.

Never question God’s love for you – it’s as steadfast as His holiness. If it wasn’t for God’s love, we wouldn’t find true happiness. Put simply, God is love and His love for us is eternal! Open your heart to Him today and if you’re faced with a weak moment repeat this – “Yes, I Receive God’s Love.
