The Christmas season is my favorite time of year, and I make sure to make time for daily scripture readings, Christmas Bible journaling, and spending time with family and friends who are as passionate as I am about Jesus as I am. Yes, there’s still time for making Christmas cookies and wrapping presents, but I don’t want to lose sight of the real reason to celebrate the season.Christmas Bible journaling ideas Isaiah 9

For those of you who haven’t been introduced to Bible journaling yet, it’s a wonderful way to bring God’s Word to life both for yourself and for others. The Christmas season is one of the most spiritual times of the year to submerge yourself in scripture and worship. Christmas Bible journaling is a wonderful way to engage with the Word and share the good news of Jesus’ birth with others.

5 Christmas Bible Journaling Ideas

The question I get the most is, “Where do I start?” Don’t panic! You can start anywhere. Why not focus on one of your favorite scriptures, one that fits in with the Christmas season, or one that particularly touches you at the moment. Perhaps you’ll do what I do and pray first, then randomly flip open your Bible to see where God takes you. You can also take our Beginner’s course which is provided at no charge.

After you’ve prayed and read the Scripture, let the Word of God inspire your creativity through a tracing exercise, hand lettering, adding a little paint to the page, or a few stickers. Here are a few verses and ideas for Christmas Bible journaling.

1. Matthew 1:23
Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel (God with Us).”

Journaling Idea: Using gel pens, or other journaling supplies that you prefer working with, draw a brilliant star with glitter pens, representing the Coming of Messiah. One year I created Mother Mary holding baby Jesus by tracing a template. To date, it’s still one of my favorites.

2. Matthew 1:21
“She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

Journaling Idea: How does this verse make you feel? Full of love and appreciation? Show it from the heart, perhaps spelling out his name, Jesus, in a way that inspires you. You can do this freehand, use a stamp pad, or place stickers.

3. Luke 2:10Christmas Bible journaling ideas luke 2“But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people.”

Journaling Idea: This verse makes me feel joyful which it will probably do for you as well. With this one, you could create a beautiful angel, surrounded by splashes of color. Whatever represents pure joy to you.

4. Luke 2:7
“And she gave birth to her firstborn son, and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn.”

Journaling Idea: How does this verse make you feel? Are you envisioning baby Jesus in his humble manger? Mary and Joseph at his side? Take the feelings you’re experiencing and add them to your journal through colors, imagery, whatever you’re inspired to do. You could draw a manger with a baby in it. You could draw a barn with a star above it. There are so many ways you could illustrate this scene.

5. Matthew 2:11
“After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother, and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”

Journaling Idea: This verse always brings to mind the “little drummer boy” song I used to hear when Christmas shopping in the mall as a child. Such happy memories. What does this verse do for you? Maybe a picture of three presents would work with the words of the gifts. Perhaps you’re an amazing illustrator and draw the entire scene!

Bible Journaling Process

There are several methods to use to read and understand your Bible. One is the “SOAP” (S.O.A.P), one of the most common ways to read your bible. S = Scripture; O = Observation; A = Application; P = Prayer. Another way to study the Bible is to use the “GOD” method, G = Grow; O = Observe, D = Draw. I prefer the GOD method, especially when it comes to Christmas Bible journaling. Mostly because it’s easy for me to remember.

Why is Christmas Important?

Unfortunately, many people seemed to have forgotten why we celebrate Christmas. It makes me sad that people don’t call it Christmas and instead choose to say Happy Holidays. I say Merry Christmas, and my cards almost always spell it out like CHRISTmas. I’ll never forget why it’s important, but for those who don’t know,  here you go.

Christmas is important because it’s the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. God sent his only son to us who would one day grow up and take on the burden of being our salvation. His story is one of truth, hope, and love.

Without Jesus, we would have perished. But, with him, our sins are washed away, and we can have a relationship with our God. The only true God.

Christmas is a time of great joy, healing and renewed strength for everyone who understands the sacrifice that Jesus made and accepts him as their savior. And it’s easy to do. You don’t need to make a bold statement. Just spend a few minutes alone and ask Him to allow the Holy Spirit to guide you.
