Saved by Grace – Saved by Grace Through Faith

The concept of “saved by grace through faith” can be difficult to comprehend. The fact is that the Bible clearly states that salvation is sola gratia, meaning “by grace alone.” As Paul says in Ephesians 2:9, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast.”

What Does It Mean to be Saved by Grace through Faith?

It means that we did nothing to merit salvation. In other words, Grace is receiving what we don’t deserve from our Lord. He generously forgives of our sins through the blood of Jesus Christ. While we may not earn entrance into heaven, we’re able to do so through Jesus.

It’s not always easy to understand what it means to be saved by grace. Perhaps an example might be helpful.

  • Justice: You get caught shoplifting by a security guard who contacts the police who take you to jail. This is justice and well deserved.
  • Mercy:  You get caught shoplifting, but instead of being reported the security guard sets you free. This is mercy. You didn’t get what you deserved.
  • Unmerited Favor: You’re caught shoplifting, but – instead of having you arrested – you’re not just released, they give you the item too! In this case, you definitely didn’t get what you deserved.

In the case of “justice,” you got what you deserved. With “mercy,” you did not get what you deserved. In the last scenario, you ended up getting what you don’t deserve. This is an example of unmerited favor or in other words, grace.

How Can You Be Saved by Grace through Faith?

The only way to be saved by grace through faith is to put your trust in Jesus. God sacrificed his ONLY son for our sin.  Jesus paid the ultimate price – that’s true love. Bottom line, “saved by grace” means that as Christians we are protected from righteous judgment because of the “unmerited” favor given to us by Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.

The gift of grace is only realized in your life if you accept it. The problem is that accepting grace can be difficult, especially if you feel unworthy. By accepting grace, you acknowledge that God sacrificed his son for the sole purpose of giving grace to all sinners, making it a lot easier to receive His wondrous gift.

If you aren’t saved by grace in faith, you’ll never realize the purity and love of the gift. If you went home today and found a gift awaiting you on your table and left it to collect dust, never to be opened, you would lose out on the pleasure of the gift. The giver would lose out on the feelings of joy that would come from giving it. In other words, a gift is useless to everyone involved unless you accept it.

Pray to God – Ask Him to Help You Receive It

Give yourself over to God through prayer and ask Him to help you receive grace. He is ready to help you and hears clearly when you pray, worship, and study His word. Besides ensuring that we are saved by grace through faith, prayer is vital for a fulfilling life. To make any progress in life, we need to pray.

Remind Yourself of God’s Love for You (get in the Word)

When you’re feeling lost, fearful, or have slipped away from your faith, remind yourself of God’s love for you. There’s ample proof around you that God loves you, but the first place you should turn is his written Word. God’s love for you is certain and steadfast, and it is through him that you will be saved by grace through faith.

Stop Trying to Earn It

So many people believe that they don’t deserve God’s grace. So, they try to earn it. Have you ever tried to give something to someone who wanted to reciprocate? It kind of diminishes what you were trying to do, right? That’s what you do when you try to earn grace. You diminish what Jesus did for you. Grace isn’t about what you deserve; it’s about what God gives.

While works can help fuel the Spirit, the Bible clearly states that you can’t earn a way to Heaven (Ephesians 2:9). No deeds or effort regardless of how self-sacrificing and extraordinary they are can earn you a way to Heaven. Instead of doing great things to earn your way, do them because your love for Jesus compels you to do them. Do your best to live your life as a good Christian, which is a life worth living.

Forgive Yourself

Ask God for forgiveness and be willing to forgive yourself for things you did in the past. To be able to forgive yourself sometimes requires compassion, empathy, kindness, and understanding. You’ll also need to work against the desire to sin. So, forgive yourself and remember that every day is a new day.

Don’t Worry About It

Accept God’s grace and stop worrying about whether or not you’re going to Hell, if you’re good enough, or if God’s mad at you. Worry and fear diminish the joy of life. Instead, stop being fearful and pray to Him with a thankful heart. “I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears” (Psalm 34:4).

Say Thank you

Besides worshipping our loving Savior and always asking for help, say thank you for His love and support. In the midst of our busy, stressful lives, it’s important to pause and give thanks, for everything that the Lord has done, and continues to do, for you in your life.

You are saved by grace through faith, and you can’t lose it. “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6). So, be grateful for all that you have been given, and out of respect and love, go forth and make a positive difference in your life and others.
