Spiritual Gifts List with Bible Verse References

When I started studying spiritual gifts, I looked for an exhaustive list in the Bible. Guess what? There’s no comprehensive spiritual gift list in the Bible. I expanded my search to books and articles. Many of the references have similar gifts, but hardly any of them had Bible verses attached to them. I decided to compile my own spiritual gifts list that has Bible verses directly next to the spiritual gift so that you can dive deeper into the Word and discover more for yourself.

What is a Spiritual Gift?

A spiritual gift is something God has chosen specifically for you while you’re here on earth that allows you to serve His kingdom in accordance with His will. Spiritual gifts are given by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:11) as He determines. You can ask for a Spiritual gift, and He may or may not give it to you. God provides these gifts in His timing and according to His will.

In 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 (NIV), we read that there are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

Spiritual Gift List with Bible Verses

There are a total of twenty spiritual gifts that I’ve discovered referenced in the NIV, KJV, NET, and WEB version of the New Testament. However, the Bible doesn’t list them out in an exhaustive list. There’s no one passage that includes all of them. There may even be more spiritual gifts that aren’t mentioned, like the gift of creativity or singing.

Here’s what I came up with, along with simple definitions of each gift. I encourage you to always dive deeper into the Word rather than take my thoughts as your own.

  1. Apostleship – not to be confused with the office of Apostle, apostleship is the ability to plant new ministries and churches, reach the unreached, raise up leaders, etc. (1 Corinthians 12:28, Ephesians 4:11)
  2. Prophesying – sharing a divine message (Romans 12:6, 1 Corinthians 12:10, 1 Corinthians 12:28, 1 Corinthians 13:1, 1 Corinthians 13:8, 1 Corinthians 14:6, Ephesians 4:11)
  3. Teaching – effectively communicating what the Bible says (Romans 12:7, 1 Corinthians 12:28, 1 Corinthians 14:6, 1 Corinthians 14:26, Ephesians 4:11)
  4. Miracles/Miraculous Powers – the gift of being able to perform miracles according to God’s will and timing rather than their own (1 Corinthians 12:10, 1 Corinthians 12:28)
  5. Healing – trust and faith that God will heal without wavering if God chooses not to (1 Corinthians 12:9, 1 Corinthians 12:28)
  6. Evangelist– All Christians are called to evangelize. To have the gift of evangelism means you have extra ability to overcome fear and rejection and will go above and beyond to share the truth (Ephesians 4:11)
  7. Pastor/Shepherding – this gift is the ability to teach the scriptures, care for and lead believers (Ephesians 4:11)
  8. Exhorting/Encouraging – the ability to encourage and strengthen others (Romans 12:8)
  9. Giving – the ability to give generously even if that means a lifestyle adjustment (Romans 12:8, 1 Corinthians 13:1)
  10. Helping/Serving – help or serve where there is a need (Romans 12:7, 1 Corinthians 12:28, 1 Peter 4:11)
  11. Speaking in Tongues – speaking a prayer or message in a language that you don’t know, glorying God and being led by the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:10, 1 Corinthians 12:28, 1 Corinthians 13:1, 1 Corinthians 13:8, 1 Corinthians 14:6, 1 Corinthians 14:26)
  12. Interpretation of Tongues – Someone who can interpret what someone who is speaking in tongues is saying (1 Corinthians 12:10, 1 Corinthians 14:26)
  13. Showing Mercy – someone with this gift helps those who are suffering and walks with them until God lifts their burden. (Romans 12:8)
  14. Leading – the gift of helping others to have a deeper relationship with Jesus. (Romans 12:8, 1 Corinthians 12:28)
  15. Administrating – the gift of organizing, directing, and implementing plans to lead others in the various activities or ministries of the Church (Titus 1:5)
  16. Wisdom – having a great understanding and a righteous perspective that helps others live a life of holiness (1 Corinthians 12:8, 1 Corinthians 13:1)
  17. Knowledge – the ability to understand and inform (1 Corinthians 12:8, 1 Corinthians 13:1, 1 Corinthians 13:8, 1 Corinthians 14:6)
  18. Faith – All Christians have saving faith, but those with this spiritual gift trust in God’s sovereignty and put the life in His hands. (1 Corinthians 12:9, 1 Corinthians 13:1)
  19. Hospitality – providing an open house and warm welcome to those in need (1 Peter 4:9)
  20. Discernment/Distinguishing of Spirits – the gift of distinguishing or judging a person, statement, situation, or environment (1 Corinthians 12:10)

How to Identify Your Spiritual Gifts

Now that you have the spiritual gift list, you may want to know which gifts God has provided to you. Here are a few tips to uncover them:

  1. Pray to God and ask Him to reveal them to you.
  2. Read about them in the Bible.
  3. Explore areas of interest and passion.
  4. Explore natural talents that you have.
  5. Volunteer to serve.
  6. Ask your friends, family, and church leaders what they think.
  7. Ask your church for a spiritual gifts test or other resources.

1 Corinthians 13:1-3

If I speak with the languages of men and of angels, but don’t have love, I have become sounding brass, or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but don’t have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but don’t have love, it profits me nothing.
