Unshakable Confidence – 8 Things Christians Can Do to Have More Confidence

They say that you should trust life’s journey, but the path comes with trials that can diminish confidence and send you spiraling. The fact is, God never promised that life would be easy. What He did was sacrifice His son for us, a promise that whatever we face, regardless of the fear that might cloud our thoughts, wherever we go or how far we drift from His caring arms, we’re never alone. As Christians, we should have confidence in this.

Sure, having confidence isn’t easy. It takes belief in Jesus Christ, trust that confidence comes from God, and awareness of the Holy Spirit’s intercession. God gave us the commandments, the Bible, values to live by, and the encouragement we need to help us hold on to confidence as we walk through life. He gave us family and friends, and places of love and support to turn to when we’re feeling hopeless. He provides us with blessings, miracles, stories and special people we may not have met yet who will find us when we need them the most. When you’re feeling like your confidence is shaken, reacquaint yourself with the actions below. You’ll have more confidence in the things God’s calling you to do.

Read the Bible

Simply reading the Bible is a good place to start. Focus on Scripture that demonstrates God’s endless love for his children, a love that reflects and goes beyond the love earthly parents have for a child. Doing so will provide you with the insight that will encourage confidence. Being reminded that God created you and loves you unconditionally nurtures true confidence. As you read the Bible, get into a regular rhythm. You don’t need a ton of time. 10-15 minutes should do.

Start a Bible Study Group

Go beyond just reading the Bible and study it closely. Bible study groups offer a structured time to concentrate on Scriptures that address our interests and needs. They provide an enlivening environment that helps carry us through the week, a safe place to work through the challenges we face, and an opportunity to share triumphs with people we trust. Bible study also keeps us accountable, so we don’t get lost along the way.

Pray for Discernment

Pray for discernment. God will be with you as you encounter obstacles in life that feel impossible to overcome alone. When we ask in faith, He gives us the wisdom we need at that particular moment to face any challenge with confidence. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” (James 1:5).

Listen to the Holy Spirit

Listening to the Holy Spirit will give you the insight necessary to increase your confidence. The more time you spend with the Holy Spirit, the more clearly you’ll hear His voice. Listen carefully and discern the message. The Holy Spirit will never ask you to do anything that contradicts God’s Word.

Helping Others Helps You

Do you realize that those who volunteer have higher confidence levels? Not only do they gain skills while volunteering, but they also improve their social skills. People who have compassionate goals feel more connected with those around them and with God. Consequently, they feel better about themselves and have more confidence. One of the main reasons that serving others helps us to feel better about ourselves is because by doing so we’re reflecting God’s character.

Take a Step in Faith

Confidence and wisdom will come through having the peace in our mind that we’re doing what God is calling us to do. Often, it’s simply making the decision to take a step in faith. God can open or close doors as He leads followers who are willing to be led. When you live life the way He has asked you to, you will be living an abundant, truly blessed life. In His love, and with His guidance, anything can be achieved.

Don’t Expect it to Be Easy

If the gate is narrow, you’re probably on the right track (Matthew 7:13-14). God never promised that…

  • Our days would be easy.
  • That if we offer our love we’ll always be loved in return.
  • That we would never experience failure, pain or loss.
  • That everything would go our way.
  • We would always know the right road to take (or that it would be bump-free).

What He did promise was that He would always be by our side, carrying us through the difficult times, arms always outstretched in love and support (Isaiah 46:4). When you open yourself up to Him you’ll experience strength, hope, and confidence.

Learn from Mistakes

Learn from mistakes, pray for discernment, listen to the Holy Spirit and try again. It’s also important to forgive yourself. Let’s face it, everybody makes mistakes – that’s part of the human condition. This doesn’t mean you should gloss over your wrongdoings. Admit that you’ve made a mistake or sinned, repent and ask God for forgiveness. He has promised to forgive us which makes it possible to forgive ourselves.

Always remember – the Lord loves you – it’s a pure love that you won’t receive from anybody else. There will be times when your confidence will be tested. But, you know exactly what it takes to glorify God. May you have unshakable confidence.
