Why Christians Don’t Share the Gospel

I have many excuses as to why I haven’t shared the Gospel as much as I should. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • I don’t want to lose this relationship.

  • I’m not educated or don’t know enough about the Gospel.

  • I’m not good with my words.

  • I’m not a pastor.

  • I didn’t go to seminary school.

  • I’m too busy.

  • I’m afraid or scared.

  • It’s not the right time.

  • I will get in trouble for sharing (at work, at school, at home).

  • He/she won’t believe me.

  • He/she will think I’m a Bible thumper, crazy, or weird.

  • He/she will hate me.

  • He/she already knows about Jesus.

I think the last one is the most dangerous one. I don’t share the Gospel because I assume the person that I’m already talking to already knows it. Yet, so many Christians don’t know the Gospel or believe in a false doctrine.

How many Christians do you know that have walked away from their faith? Why? Is it because they’ve thrown their hands in the air at all of the rules and traditions we try to impose on them? Have they “been there done that” when pastors or influencers talk about the ten ways to be a better Christian, steps to save your marriage, be sexually pure, and more? Maybe they were taught that the ten commandments were the key to salvation and decided they (like everyone else except Jesus) were too flawed to be saved. Instead of finding hope, they found despair.

When I don’t share the Gospel, I miss out on planting a seed and bringing hope to a very lost world. I’m getting better at sharing the Gospel, but I’m nowhere near perfect. In my last three jobs, I didn’t hesitate to share when I had the opportunity. I even spoke at a marketing conference and shared my faith in a room that sat 800 people! I totally thought I’d be fired after that! Nope, my manager didn’t even mention it. Maybe nobody complained. I was prepared for the worldly consequences of my actions if what I had to say impacted just one life. My husband and I talked about how I could be fired for sharing my beliefs multiple times, and we were prepared.

Now I’m not suggesting that you become a public speaker and throw Gospel bombs on your unsuspecting audience. I believe you pray about what God would have you say or do when given the opportunity…and ask for more opportunities! The Gospel is the only thing that saves. Let’s not keep it to ourselves.

Isaiah 46:9-10

Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like Me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Matthew 6:25-26

Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
