7 Bible Verses for Breaking Bad Habits
Breaking bad habits is hard. When I’m working on breaking my bad habits I turn to the Bible for instruction, encouragement, and strength. Here are 7 of my Bible journaling entries for breaking bad habits.
1 Corinthians 15:55 – Sin is the Sting of Death
“Death, where is your sting? Hades, where is your victory?”
1 John 1: 9 – Confess Your Sins
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Colossians 3:5-15 – What You Should Do and Not Do
5 Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry; 6 for which things’ sake the wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience. 7 You also once walked in those, when you lived in them; 8 but now you also put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and shameful speaking out of your mouth. 9 Don’t lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old man with his doings, 10 and have put on the new man, who is being renewed in knowledge after the image of his Creator, 11 where there can’t be Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bondservant, freeman; but Christ is all, and in all.
12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.
14 Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.
Ephesians 4:22-24 – Leave Your Bad Habits Behind
22 that you put away, as concerning your former way of life, the old man, that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit; 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.
Ephesians 4:24-31 – Be a New Person
24 and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.
25 Therefore putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor. For we are members of one another. 26 “Be angry, and don’t sin.”[a] Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 and don’t give place to the devil. 28 Let him who stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, producing with his hands something that is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need. 29 Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice.
Galatians 6:1-2 – Help Others Break Bad Habits
6 Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; looking to yourself so that you also aren’t tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
Proverbs 28:13 – Don’t Hide Your Bad Habits
He who conceals his sins doesn’t prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.
I will be reading these with God even more of his time with us.

I pray that god also forgives me for all my signs and has no mercy for me, I love you so much and I thank you for such an amazing life 🙂
You are already forgiven
Repent the sin, then ask forgiveness. It is important to take that action first. Now ask forgiveness. To repent recognizes your error and you intend not to do it again.
I want to know why I cannot stop tell lies no matter how much I try can you help me
Hi hon! I just prayed for you 🙂 I would say the best thing to do is to pray that God would help you to stop lying. Even when you are about to lie, pray to Him. If you lie, ask him for forgiveness and go reconcile to the person you lied to. Also, ask yourself…why are you lying? What is the reason/purpose? And of course…read Scriptures that pertain to lying. You can find many of them. God bless you my friend!
Im a new Christian, and I smoked cigarettes. I was being convicted every time I smoked one,I threw my cigarettes away today, because I don’t want anything to hinder my spirit. You have to truly want a closer relationship with God, I have to pray alot, because I am craving them, and I’m reading scripture about breaking bad habits
That’s great Thomas! I’m glad you’re headed to Scripture – that’s where we all need to be 🙂
I could use your prayer to not smoke and for anxiety. Thanks for all you do.
Praying for you!
I myself smoked on a regular basis, but i haven’t done so for a month and a half now. I prayed and ask God to help me stop smoking, even when I am smoking I keep saying I don’t smoke, it stinks, not good for my health, and my finances. I too sometimes feel in dental, and guilty. When someone ask me for a cigarette,
I would play the good samaritan and give them three and four. Sometimes you would see their faces lit up, thinking Christmas surely came early. I would sometimes drop the remaining cigarettes in the lift lobby, on the stairs for someone to pick up. Not sending a good message yet. As someone elses life is being destroyef. I belive God has heard my prayer, because I don’t feel I need to smoke for over a month now. I do not believe smoking will keep me out of heaven, because there is no scripture to say that specifically. But I do believe that as I accepted Christ as Saviour, The Holy Spirit needs a place to live to walk me through each day, and if my body is contaminated with smoke, I don’t believe God’s Spirit will be comfy there. Dont you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who dwells in you. I could probably roll that scripture over and over in my head for starters. As I seek medicine from the pharmacy for my outer body, so too i must dig deep in God’s word for medicine for my soul, and one day, God will take away that craving for Good. Our words have the power to build up and destroy, so i am going to make it a habit to speak life by the words/ scriptures i say to heal my soul.
