8 Ways to Show Grace in Everyday Life

Before you can thrive in your identity in Christ, you must first understand who you are. You can search high and low for the world to give you answers, and you’ll probably hear words like mother, father, daughter, son, aunt, uncle, friend, neighbor, hard-worker, home-maker, or things related to your vocation or other activities. But what you do, isn’t who you are.

The following are eight ways to show grace in everyday life.

1. Be There for Others

One of the greatest things we can give someone is our support. Quite often, our presence is all someone needs to feel that they’re loved. If the person is happy about something – be happy with them (Romans 12:15).  Are they missing a loved one who has passed, or facing bad news? Be a compassionate shoulder to lean on. Not sure what’s troubling them? Try to read between the lines and simply be there for them.

2. Forgive Fully

When somebody asks you to forgive them, offer it graciously and without condemnation. As God’s children, it’s our responsibility to be forgiving, just as Jesus created the commandment for His disciples to do so in Matthew 6:14-15.

3. Ask for Forgiveness

Don’t hesitate to ask for forgiveness when you have wronged someone. The same applies if you make a mistake that affects someone else. If it’s hard for you, first talk to God. He’s always there for you. Ask for His forgiveness and to give you the strength you need to ask the person you’ve hurt to forgive you.

“If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” – Mathew 5:23-24 (WEB)

4. Be Mindful of How You Communicate

Be mindful of how you express yourself. Speak with a calm voice, be gentle, be kind, and be fully present when you interact with people. Avoid using bad language or a judgmental tone. Applying principles of mindfulness to the way you correspond with others will help you relate to them with compassion.

“Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear.” – Ephesians 4:29

5. Be a Calming Presence During Troubled Times

Take the opportunity to be there for others during difficult times. They don’t necessarily need you to do anything or give them a speech about how they should feel. Your presence might be all that’s needed to show your love and support. You’d be surprised how even a short visit can have an impact on someone’s life during troubled times.

6. Look for Opportunities to Help

When you are aware of others around you, you’ll notice when others are in need because they will often show signs of frustration, sadness, or despair. You’ll be amazed by how showing kindness can help in significant ways. Sometimes all that’s needed to make someone’s day are kind words and acts. For example, if you see something beautiful in someone (their hair, outfit, smile, etc.), tell them! It may take only a minute to say, but it can change the direction of that person’s day. When it comes to actions, an act as simple as holding the door open for a tired mom at the store, and sharing a smile, is all it takes to cheer them up.

“In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another;” -Romans 12:10

7. Gratitude

Start your day with an attitude of gratitude. Reflect on things in your life that you’re grateful for. Say thank you frequently and let loved ones know how grateful you are to have them in your life. Whether it’s being grateful for God’s never-ending love and for him forgiving your sins, a loving friend or family member, a boss who appreciates you, or simply the pleasure of enjoying a great cup of coffee – be grateful.

“In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:18

8. Let it Go – and Let God

Holding on to negativity in your life (a bad childhood, hurt feelings, etc.) inhibits the ability to show grace and gratitude. Get the support you need to let go of what you feel is standing in the way of you living your best life. With God’s help, you can “let it go”, be grateful, and show grace to others.

If we fail to show grace and are unable to forgive, we end up charting a path to loneliness, heartbreak, and pain. Instead, make an effort to be the hands and feet of God in this world. What are other ways you show grace in everyday life?
