Thriving in Your Identity in Christ

Before you can thrive in your identity in Christ, you must first understand who you are. You can search high and low for the world to give you answers, and you’ll probably hear words like mother, father, daughter, son, aunt, uncle, friend, neighbor, hard-worker, home-maker, or things related to your vocation or other activities. But what you do, isn’t who you are.

Sometimes I struggle with taking off my worldly identity and remembering my identity in Christ. When I forget who I am in Christ, life gets a lot darker. I can find myself swimming in depression, frustrated with those who I’m surrounded by, and disappointed in myself. I have to keep remembering who I am in Christ so that I can face what the world throws at me with confidence and clarity. The checklist below really helps.

Your Identity in Christ

I encourage you to print this checklist off and keep it nearby. When the world throws all its got at you, take out this list and remember your identity in Christ. Repeat these phrases and Bible verses and consider Bible journaling them, writing them down, or creating something in your faith art journal.

Who I Am Checklist

I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Psalm 139:14 World English Bible (WEB)

I will give thanks to you,
for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Your works are wonderful.
My soul knows that very well.

I am a princess (or prince), specifically chosen and adopted by the King to be His kid.

Ephesians 1:3-11 World English Bible (WEB)

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and without defect before him in love, having predestined us for adoption as children through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his desire, to the praise of the glory of his grace, by which he freely gave us favor in the Beloved, in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him 10 to an administration of the fullness of the times, to sum up all things in Christ, the things in the heavens and the things on the earth, in him.

I am forever loved by my father.

Romans 8:37-39 World English Bible (WEB)

37 No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I am born again into a living hope.

1 Peter 1:3-5 World English Bible (WEB)

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an incorruptible and undefiled inheritance that doesn’t fade away, reserved in Heaven for you, who by the power of God are guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

I am justified through faith.

Romans 5:1 World English Bible (WEB)

Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ;

I am holy and righteous.

Ephesians 4:22-24 World English Bible (WEB)

22 that you put away, as concerning your former way of life, the old man that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.

I am debt-free.

Colossians 2:13-14 World English Bible (WEB)

13 You were dead through your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh. He made you alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 wiping out the handwriting in ordinances which was against us. He has taken it out of the way, nailing it to the cross.

I am lacking no good thing.

Psalm 34:10 World English Bible (WEB)

The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger,
but those who seek Yahweh shall not lack any good thing.

I am no longer a slave to sin.

Romans 6:11 World English Bible (WEB)

Thus consider yourselves also to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I am the light of this world.

Matthew 5:14 World English Bible (WEB)

You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden.

I am with Him.

John 14:26 World English Bible (WEB)

26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you.

I am a citizen of Heaven.

Philippians 3:20-21 World English Bible (WEB)

20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from where we also wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will change the body of our humiliation to be conformed to the body of his glory, according to the working by which he is able even to subject all things to himself.

I am a friend of Jesus.

John 15:15 World English Bible (WEB)

15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant doesn’t know what his lord does. But I have called you friends, for everything that I heard from my Father, I have made known to you.

I am God’s child

Romans 8:16-17 World English Bible (WEB)

16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God17 and if children, then heirs: heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified with him.

There are so many more Bible verses about your identity in Christ. Don’t stop here. Keep going by finding verses that speak to you and encourage you each and every day.

This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.
